Services

Cataract

Our internationally trained specialists are highly skilled surgeons capable of dealing with cataracts of all complexities. The latest laser technology is utilised to take highly precise measurements of the eye and micro incision cataract surgery is performed with state of the art surgical instrumentations. Retina

The retinal service provides comprehensive care for all retinal disorders. It is supported by the latest retinal diagnostic tools and treatment is provided by internationally trained retinal surgeons.

Treatment options available for medical and surgical problems of the retina include (but not limited to):

• Intravitreal injections of antiVEGF drugs (Avastin or Lucentis)

• Pattern scanning retinal laser photocoagulation for a faster and more comfortable laser treatment compared to conventional technique

• Microincision vitrectomy surgery using the latest state of the art machine for quicker and safer surgery with faster recovery of the eye

Cornea and Refractive Surgery

The cornea and refractive surgery service provides comprehensive care for all corneal related problems. Our internationally trained specialist is highly skilled in the management of the diseases of cornea. Management of refractive errors (short sightedness, long sightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia) is also provided.

Examples of corneal and refractive surgeries performed include:

• Corneal transplants (Penetrating Keratoplasty Lamellar Keratoplasties­ : DSEK & DALK)

• Pterygium surgery

• Anterior segment reconstruction

• Laser vision correction (LASIK, LASEK, PRK)

Glaucoma

The Glaucoma service provides comprehensive and dedicated care to patients with all forms of glaucoma. A wide range of diagnostic modalities including computerised visual field testing, gonioscopy, OCT, tonometry, and optic nerve head imaging are utilised in the management of glaucoma conditions. Besides medical therapy, surgical techniques including laser therapy, augmented trabeculectomies, non­ penetrating filtration surgery as well as filtration devices like Ahmed Glaucoma Valve Implants or Baerveldt Glaucoma implants are available for the treatment of glaucoma.

Floaters

Floaters are a common symptom experienced by patients. In most cases, they can be ignored and left alone. However in a proportion of patients, the floaters cause sufficient distress to the patient that surgery is warranted to reduce the floaters.

At ISEC Penang, we have the expertise to perform minimally invasive surgery (microincision vitrectomy) to remove the troublesome floaters (floaterectomy).

Oculoplastic and Aesthetic

The oculoplastic service can provide the solution to all problems relating to the eyelid – be it cosmetic or pathological. Our surgeon is internationally trained with extensive experience in dealing with the delicate skin around the eye. By combining tried and tested surgical techniques with the latest development in cosmetic surgery, excellent results can be achieved.

Examples of oculoplastic procedures performed include:

Paediatric

The paediatric service is provided by an internationally trained paediatric ophthalmologist, supported by an experienced full time optometrist and set in a comfortable environment for the child.

Apart from dealing with serious paediatric eye conditions, the service also provides routine eye screening checks for children. Routine checks are important in children, as they may not be aware of problems with their eyes. In some conditions, there is a limited time window when treatment is effective.

Examples of eye problems picked up at routine screening include:

• Refractive errors (short sight, long sight, astigmatism)

• Amblyopia (lazy eye)

• Squint

• Congenital cataract

Squint

Care and management of squint related problems are provided by an internationally trained eye specialist. Both adult and paediatric squints are catered for. Surgical correction of squints can lead to both improved cosmesis and eye function.
